"Dexter" is set in Miami, but is actually filmed in and around Long Beach and Hollywood, CA.
In the season-8 episode "What's Eating Dexter Morgan?", Dexter takes Deb to an Italian restaurant to show her that the man she saved in a restaurant shootout in the past is still alive, and spending time with his family. Dexter tries to convince Deb that she is a good person and that she has made a positive impact on the world, despite her collusion with Dexter on his murders.
The on-screen eatery in real life is Miceli's Italian Restaurant on Las Palmas Avenue in Hollywood (just off of Hollywood Boulevard). I recognized this location immediately, since I've eaten at Miceli's more than a few times during my Hollywood adventures. (The hanging jugs were the biggest giveaway.) I also didn't notice when I was there, but after watching the episode I realized I'd been seated in the same booth as the guy Deb saved!
Deb and Dexter were seated on the second level, overlooking my booth and the rest of the restaurant.
Dexter and Deb sat up there!
Deb calls the restaurant a "hellhole", but it's actually a pretty nice place! Miceli's has a long Hollywood history (many celebs have eaten there over the years) and good pizza! I'd recommend it if you're in the Hollywood & Highland area and are looking for something a little more substantial than Starbucks and McDonalds, or less commercial than the Hard Rock Cafe.
