The GoodFellas Diner from “GoodFellas”, “The Good Wife”, “You Don’t Know Jack”, “Going in Style”, and more

LOCATION

The GoodFellas Diner (previously the Clinton Diner) in Queens, which has been a filming location for dozens of movies and TV shows, including its namesake film, “GoodFellas”.

ADDRESS

GoodFellas Diner
5626 Maspeth Ave
Maspeth, NY

STORY & PHOTOS

There are some filming locations that seem to pop up over and over and over again in tons of media, but they’re so everyday and somewhat nondescript that even though it may look familiar you wouldn’t necessarily be like, “oh, it’s that place again!” (Did I just make any sense? If not, sorry.) The GoodFellas Diner is one of those places; it’s appeared on screen so many times that you’ve certainly seen it more than once but probably didn’t notice. I was looking for filming locations near Brooklyn in December and found this diner, happy that I could take my boyfriend someplace he might actually care about (after dragging him to a bunch of places only I care about) since he loves Scorsese and “GoodFellas”. A little more research told me that this place has been in tons of stuff, including one of my favorites, “The Good Wife”.

The 78th Precinct from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

LOCATION

The exterior of the precinct seen each week on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”.

ADDRESS

78th Precinct
65 6th Avenue
Brooklyn, NY

STORY & PHOTOS

I’m a huge fan of FOX’s police/workplace comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”. It’s sincere, amazingly cast, and genuinely funny. If you don’t find yourself amused as hell by Captain Holt at least once an episode, rush immediately to your doctor because there is definitely something wrong with you. ANYWAY, I recently found myself in Brooklyn and decided a good decision would be to take an Uber to the actual Brooklyn precinct that stands in for the 99th precinct on the show (probably freaking out my Uber driver in the process). Here’s how the precinct appears on the show:

STORY & PHOTOS

Tempting as it may be to play it cool and try to skip some of the more obvious touristy spots on a visit to New York City, I can’t recommend skipping the Empire State Building. It’s an iconic landmark of the city and has a great aerial view of surrounding Manhattan. Everybody’s gotta do it at least once!

Kimmy and Titus’s apartment from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”

ADDRESS

74 Freeman St.
Brooklyn, NY

Note: this is a private residence. It’s okay to take photos from the street, but be sure not to trespass or disturb those who live there!

STORY & PHOTOS

Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” brainchild of Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, is one of the funniest shows in a long time, and it puts a fun and whimsical spin on New York, where former mole woman Kimmy decides to live when she’s released from her kidnapper cult leader’s bunker. She doesn’t have much money and needs an apartment, so she ends up renting a basement room from weirdo Lillian in Brooklyn. Her new roommate? Titus Andromedon. It’s not a glamorous apartment – when Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) sees it for the first time, she asks, “What happened? Did Hurricane Katrina come back?” – but it’s home to Kimmy and Titus.

That much-loved scene takes place in Boston’s Public Garden:

“Reality Stars Give Back” Toys for Tots Fundraiser

WHERE VFW Hall, Portsmouth, NH
WHEN December 4, 2015

Last Friday my friend Alex and I, who have both loved summertime guilty pleasure “Big Brother” for a long time, went to the 8th annual Reality Stars Give Back fundraiser for Toys for Tots in Portsmouth, NH. Despite the fact that this has been going on for eight years, this was the first year I’d ever gone. I think the appearances of our BB17 favorites Johnny Mac and Jason are what caught my eye. Anyway, we decided to go and I’m really glad we did!

The Peabody Essex Museum from “Bride Wars”

LOCATION

Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, which serves as the backdrop for the reception of the wedding of Amanda (June Diane Raphael) in “Bride Wars.”

STORY & PHOTOS

2009’s “Bride Wars” tells the story of two best friends, Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway), who turn into competitors when they realize that only one of them can have their dream wedding at the Plaza. Shenanigans and hijinks ensue, threatening the girls’ friendship. Before things get to that point, though, they happily attend the wedding of their friend Amanda, whose reception is held in Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum. Salem, MA is probably better known for its notorious witch trials back in 1692, but there are things to do there besides touristy witch things, and the PEM is one of them.

STORY & PHOTOS

My friend Alex and I recently took a “Hocus Pocus” trip to Salem, MA (I wrote about Max and Dani’s house yesterday). High on our list was snapping photos in front of the gorgeous home seen as Allison’s in the movie. The historic Ropes Mansion in Salem stood in for the exterior of Allison’s house, where Max (Omri Katz) takes Dani (Thora Birch) trick-or-treating:

STORY & PHOTOS

I’ve always been obsessed with the Salem Witch Trials; even as a kid I found the whole thing really fascinating. My family took trips to Salem a couple of times and I visited with friends around Halloween time in high school, but somehow I’d never managed to seek out the filming locations from the Halloween classic “Hocus Pocus”, which was filmed right in town. So this year my friend Alex and I took a day trip to Witch City to pose with some of the still-standing locations.
