STORY & PHOTOS

Veronica Mars: sarcastic, whip-smart, loyal but prickly, and - oh yeah - a teenage detective. When Veronica wasn't at high school (ugh) or trying to solve her best friend's murder, she was working alongside her dad Keith, a former sheriff and licensed private investigator.

One of the places I most wanted to visit was Veronica and Keith's apartment complex, which was supposed to be poor and ramshackle compared to the 09ers, but looked pretty sweet to me. (I live in Maine, and they had a pool year-round, so I was sold.)

The Inn at Sunset Cliffs stood in for Veronica and Keith's low-key apartment complex. In real life it's right on the beach and very pretty! I got butterflies when I saw it in person.

In episode 107, "The Girl Next Door", you can see a neon sign that says "Sunset Cliffs Apartments". I think it's cute that they kept part of the real name of the location in the show.

Full disclosure: I felt weird just walking into the pool area since I wasn't staying at the hotel, so I got really awkward and fibbed a little to the receptionist that I was considering it for a group retreat, and could I take a few pictures? She was totally amenable, and then I was secretly jazzed that I had just Veronica Mars-ed my way in. I'm a dork. A well-intentioned dork. And she probably would have been fine if I had just said I was a "Veronica Mars" superfan.

If you're in the San Diego area, you could stay here and be part of the Mars world!
