You’ve watched Kevin Smith’s movies, with their quirky characters and wacky plotlines. Haven’t you ever wished you too lived in the View Askewniverse? Well, maybe you can’t hang out with Banky and Brody and T.S. and Holden and Alyssa and Gil Hicks, but you can spend a day cruising through Kevin Smith’s New Jersey and visit the places seen in Chasing Amy, Clerks, and more…

Start out by visiting Red Bank, NJ which is Smith’s hometown. Here you can scope out several sites from the View Askewniverse. Start out at 10 Bridge Avenue, the House of Coffee and then head to Take a Shot Billiards Club at 6 Bridge Avenue - both were used for background shots in Chasing Amy. At 2 Bridge Avenue you’ll find The Galleria, which is where Holden and Banky said goodbye at the train station in Chasing Amy.

Make your way two minutes across town to Mechanic Street, which is where Holden and Alyssa argue in the rain in Chasing Amy.

Across the way on Broad Street you’ll find Jack’s Music Shoppe - in Chasing Amy Holden and Banky live about the shop, and there are scenes inside the store as well as on the front steps.

You’ll also see Prown’s Department Store, which was used for background shots in Chasing Amy; and Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, the comic book store owned by Kevin Smith (which he sometimes pops into). The store hours are: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thurs: 11am - 6pm, Friday: 11am - 7pm, Saturday: 11am - 6pm, and Sunday: 12pm - 5pm.

The store is full of great artifacts from the films, and amazing merchandise to buy. Much of it is signed by Kevin Smith himself!

From there, head down to 10 Peters Place where you’ll come across Red Bank Catholic High School, where Banky waxed philosophical about pursuing underage girls in Chasing Amy. Around the corner at 3 Harding Road is View Askew Productions, the office for Kevin Smith’s production company. It’s nothing special to look at, but who knows who you might run into?

Once you’ve gotten your fill of Red Bank, why not take a drive down the coast and check out a few other locations? Start by heading up to The Marina Diner on Route 36 at Seeley Street in Belford; this is where Silent Bob gave his speech to Holden and Jay about love in Chasing Amy.

Continue over to 58 & 60 Leonard Ave in Leonardo, which is the Quik Stop and RST Video where Smith worked and filmed Clerks. From there cruise east over to Posten’s Funeral Home at 59 E. Lincoln Ave in Atlantic Highlands, where Julie Dwyer’s funeral was held in Clerks.

From there, head south to Asbury Park. Here you can find the Asbury Park Boardwalk where the first scene of Dogma takes place and where Holden and Alyssa play Skee Ball in Chasing Amy. Nearby at 1401 Ocean Avenue is the Berkeley Hotel, which was used for the comic book convention in Chasing Amy.

Finally, end at 179 Chambersbridge Road in Brick Township, the Ocean Ice Palace, which is where the hockey game in Chasing Amy took place.

Since it hit the air in 2006, MTV’s glossy reality soap “The Hills” has taken Hollywood by storm. Don’t lie - you know you can’t get enough of this guilty pleasure half-hour drama-fest. Combining equal parts beautiful people and beautiful places, “The Hills” presents a chic, hot Hollywood that anyone would love to be a part of. Well, here’s your chance! Isn’t it about time you spent a week walking in Lauren’s Jimmy Choos?

Lauren lived at the Park La Brea Apartments at 6220 W Third Street with Heidi in the first and second seasons and Audrina in the third season. Now Lauren, Audrina, and Lo start their days at their brand-new home at 1627 N Orange Grove Avenue (it’s okay to cruise the street but don’t trespass on private property!) and Lauren is enrolled at the Los Angeles Campus of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising on South Grand Avenue, where she has some classes with Spencer’s sister Stephanie. (Heidi attended FIDM briefly in the beginning of the first season before dropping out.) Heidi and Spencer live at La Fontaine Apartments on N Curson.

Lauren and Whitney worked hard for “Teen Vogue” during the first three seasons - Lauren fixed a candle and decorated an umbrella, among other tasks, at the Ashley Paige Store at 643 N La Cienega Blvd; Lauren and Whitney attended a tasting at the Patina Restaurant at the Disney Concert Hall, 141 S Grand Avenue; did a photo shoot with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus at the Santa Monica Airport; did model castings at Smashbox Studios (8538 Warner Drive in Culver City); worked at “Teen Vogue” Young Hollywood parties at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and the Vibiana Church on S Main Street. Heidi (sort of?) works as well, logging hours at Bolthouse Productions on Beverly Boulevard and at the club Area on N La Cienega. In the first season Audrina works at Quixote Studios on N Poinsettia Place and in the third season Audrina and Chiara spent some time with Sean Kingston at El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard as part of their job at Epic Records in Santa Monica.

All work and no play is no fun! But there’s always time to go shopping, right? Lauren, Heidi, Jason, and Jordan went to The Grove in “Somebody Always Has to Cry.” Lauren and Lo checked out the Diane Merrick Clothing Salon on Beverly Boulevard in “What Goes Around…” and Lauren and Jordan shop for Jason’s Christmas present at XIV Karats Ltd at 314 South Beverly Drive.

Sometimes it’s nice to just relax. In “Rolling With The Enemy,” Lauren, Lo, Audrina, and Brody hang out with friends at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard, a famed Hollywood location full of legends, tales of Old Hollywood movie stars, and ghost stories. For New Year’s Eve in the first season, Lauren and Heidi get their hair done at the Warren Tricomi Salon at 8327 Melrose Avenue. In “Meet The Parents,” Brody hosts a barbecue at the Polaroid Beach House on Billionaire’s Beach, Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu that Lauren, Lo, Audrina, Frankie and Justin Bobby attend.

Girls night out is supposed to be fun, and they usually are - unless you run into your sworn frenemy. Lauren and Heidi have had confrontations at the 2007 Declare Yourself event, which was held at the Beverly Hills Post Office on Santa Monica Boulevard, as well as at Les Deux at Frankie’s birthday party in “You Know What You Did.” Jen Bunney confronted Heidi about the sex tape rumors at Cheebo, 7533 West Sunset Boulevard. While out at Ketchup (8590 Sunset Boulevard) in “They Meet Again,” Lauren and Jason ran into Heidi and Spencer, which made for an awkward situation. Lauren and Jen had an uneasy reunion in “What Goes Around…” at Lulu’s Café, 7149 Beverly Boulevard.

Feeling up for a date night? When the sun goes down, it’s time to hit the clubs. If you’re staying in Los Angeles, why not try the Magic Castle Hotel at 7025 Franklin Avenue, which is where Lauren and Whitney did a fitting with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus in “For Better or Worse.” And of course all of the drama of “The Hills” couldn’t be contained in one city, even if it’s as big as Los Angeles! If you’re itching to travel “Hills”-style, fly in and out of LAX Airport like the cast does. Lauren and Whitney sometimes go to New York City for work; Lauren has pulled a shift at the Marc Jacobs Design Studio at 72 Spring Street, while Whitney had a meeting at Teen Vogue Headquarters at 4 Times Square. The girls stayed at the W Hotel New York on Lexington Avenue. Perhaps the most fun destination the cast has gone is Las Vegas! When the gang hits up LV for Brody’s birthday in the third season, they stay at The Palms hotel on West Flamingo Road and party at PURE Nightclub on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Out on DVD this week, “21″ is the real-life-inspired story of MIT undergraduates and a professor who take on a high-rolling, card-counting life in Vegas. Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, Jim Sturgess, and Laurence Fishburne headline.

South Street Diner, Boston

We were in Boston a few weeks ago and a friend pointed out a diner near South Station as the place where college students go when the bars close, with a good crowd and relatively affordable late-night prices. When watching “21,” we spotted it as an exterior shot. Much of the blackjack team’s planning takes place in Boston, and in this particular scene, the group discusses operational strategy in the diner. We doubt that the diner - and Kneeland Street outside - would ever be so empty in real life.

The diner advertises its involvement in the film on its web site. The diner is easily accessible from South Station, which has city T, Amtrak, and bus service. Pancakes start at $8, and if you’re a college kid spending $20 or more, you get a free T-shirt.

While most of the other Boston scenes take place at MIT, the Boston University independent student newspaper reported that the movie was actually filmed on BU’s campus. The university also receives a thank-you in the credits.

For starters, the film opens with a voiceover by Danny DeVito’s character, who writes a Hollywood tattler called “Hush Hush”. The exterior of DeVito’s office is actually Hollywood’s famed Crossroads of the World, at 6671 Sunset Boulevard near Las Palmas. (This location was also used for Demi Moore’s office in “Indecent Proposal.”) The shopping mall, built in the 1930s, evokes the look of an ocean liner and is a fun, kitschy place to visit in L.A. (not to mention a great site for photos). Nearby is the Hollywood Center Motel, where a dead body is found in room 203.

Kevin Spacey’s quasi-crooked cop Vincennes busts a young couple for marijuana possession at a bungalow at 1714 Gramercy Place, just off Hollywood Boulevard. DeVito instructed him to pose with the potheads in front of a Hollywood Boulevard movie premiere.

Down the street is the Frolic Room, at 6245 Hollywood Boulevard, is where Spacey’s Vincennes stops in for a drink in the film. The Pantages Theater at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard is also seen in the film. Boardner’s, nearby at 1652 North Cherokee Boulevard, a glamorous Hollywood staple since the 40s, was used as the bar where Captain Smith gave Russell Crowe’s Officer White his badge and gun back. (This legendary establishment has also been used in “Hollywood Homicide,” “Ed Wood,” and “Leaving Las Vegas.”)

The Formosa Café at 7156 Santa Monica Boulevard is another eatery full of Hollywood history. Located right across the way from the old Warner Hollywood/Goldwyn Studios, the café has been used in several films (including “The Majestic” and cult classic “Swingers”), but has also been frequented by a bevy of Hollywood stars (such as James Dean, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe) who found its studioside location a convenient lunch getaway. In “L.A. Confidential,” the Formosa is where the detective notices the Lana Turner lookalike hooker.

Up in Los Feliz you can find The Lovell House, the streamlined abode of the film’s pimp that Crowe’s Officer White visits following the mass murder. The private residence is located at 4616 Dundee Drive.

If you head downtown, you’ll come across the Los Angeles City Hall at 200 North Spring Street, out of which the police force operates in the film. City Hall has been used in countless other productions, including the 1950s “Adventures of Superman” series, TV’s “Alias” and “Beverly Hills, 90210”; and films such as “All The President’s Men,” “The Black Dahlia,” “Dragnet,” “Hollywoodland,” and “Nancy Drew.”

Fans of the film will remember Crowe’s Officer White dangling the DA out of a window in the Pacific Electric Building at 610 South Main Street. Across the way is J&J Sandwich Shoppe at 119 East 6th Street, which stood in for the Nite Owl Café, the site of the film’s mass murder.

Now that you know the “Confidential” locations of “L.A.” you can do your own sleuthing around the city, noir-style. But you might want to make sure to avoid those back alleys when the sun goes down, lest you end up being investigated by Vincennes, White, and Exley.

Salamanca, Spain

The film takes place entirely in the Spanish city of Salamanca. The bulk of the scenes (which are repeated over, and over, from various perspectives) are set in and around the city’s La Plaza Mayor. Filmmakers didn’t use the actual plaza, instead opting to build a replica. Because of its central location, visitors say that the plaza is the city’s most popular meeting spot. A variety of cafes surround the square.

You won’t find the actual streets from “Vantage Point” in Salamanca. The city’s chase sequences in the streets around the plaza were filmed in Mexico City, Mexico.

A short feature revealing the filming location of “Hey Dude,” one of Nickelodeon’s most loved -
and most missed - shows.

As a youngster who watched Nickelodeon every afternoon, I was dying to bunk with Brad and Melody at the Bar None Ranch (and, yes, make out with Ted - what a fox). “Hey Dude” (1989-1991) is fondly remembered by fans as one of Nickelodeon’s greatest shows, and is sorely missed, especially since there has been no official DVD release. The show has been off the air for over 15 years, but there are still plenty of fans out there who’d love to live a day in Ernst’s cowboy boots!

And, in a way, you can! “Hey Dude” was filmed on location at what is now the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch in Tucson, Arizona. The ranch is styled in an authentic western motif, and offers a variety of activities such as horseback riding, hiking, biking, and swimming… and the ranch even has a spa!

Staying at Tanque Verde can get a little pricy, so bring a friend and split the costs - a weekend there will cost you a little under $200 each if you go in the summertime. (The rates are all-inclusive, though, so three meals a day and most of the ranch’s activities are included in the price - not too bad when you look at it that way!)

If you miss the days when you could see Ted, Brad, Mel, Danny, Jake, Kyle, and Buddy on your screen, at least you can spend a few days walking in their shoes at the real Bar None Ranch!

A feature revealing some of the actual summer camps that doubled as your favorite camp movie settings.

The notion of the summer camp experience is a nostalgic thing for many Americans - whether you went to camp as a kid, always dreamed of going to camp, or simply watched the summer camp antics in movies and television shows, the experience is romanticized in the minds of many and often portrayed as a seminal youth experience in popular culture. Disney Channel’s original movie “Camp Rock” is the latest camp-themed movie to capture the imaginations of millions (its premiere drew even higher ratings than that of the original “High School Musical”). Since it is summertime, and it gets us all dreaming of those summer camp days, why not take a look at the real camps that stood in for the settings of your favorite camp movies and shows?

2008’s “Camp Rock,” starring the Jonas Brothers and introducing Demi Lovato, was filmed in Canada (Haliburton, Ontario) at YMCA Wanakita (outdoor scenes) and Kilcoo Camp (indoor scenes). Camp Kilcoo is a boys’ camp with tons of activities, from windsurfing and rock climbing to arts and crafts. Camp Wanakita proves you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy camp - they offer weekend getaways for adults too! You spend the days doing indoor and outdoor activities as well as mingling with other adult campers at social events. (They also have packages for families, so gather your loved ones and go live the “Camp Rock” experience!)

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen filled the tween idol shoes before Demi Lovato did, and in 1995 they starred in “It Takes Two,” a family comedy a la “The Parent Trap” in which two identical strangers meet, swap places and plot to romantically unite their parental units. “It Takes Two” also starred Kirstie Alley and Steve Guttenberg, and was filmed at Camp Mini-Yo-We, also in Ontario, Canada.

Fellow tabloid starlet Lindsay Lohan’s “Parent Trap” was filmed at Griffith Park at the Seely camp. Adults 13 and up can pay $35 per person for a 2-day, 1-night weekend outing (younger children are charged $20-27 each).

The ultimate, classic camp flick has to be 1979’s “Meatballs,” starring the always-hilarious Bill Murray as an apathetic camp counselor named Tripper. Haliburton, Ontario seems to be the summer camp capitol of the world; “Meatballs” was filmed there at Camp Towhee and Camp White Pine. Camp Towhee boasts Adventure-Based Learning programs, while White Pine offers a plethora of outdoor activities, on land and in the water, and can be rented by groups.

Also a hilarious summer camp ball-buster, 2001’s “Wet Hot American Summer” was set in Maine but was filmed in Honesdale, Pennsylvania at Camp Towanda, a co-ed sleep away camp in the Pocono Mountains.

If you grew up in the 90s, you surely loved Nickelodeon’s kid series, “Salute Your Shorts”… in fact, we’re willing to bet you still know the words to the theme song. (We run, we jump, we swim and play, we row and go on trips…) Who didn’t want to go to Camp Anawanna?! This camp folly was actually filmed in Griffith Park in Los Angeles!

You probably also saw the film “Heavy Weights,” starring Ben Stiller and a few “Mighty Ducks” alums. The movie, set at a camp for chubby young dudes which was taken over by fitness nut Stiller, was filmed at Camp Pinnacle and Camp Ton-a-Wondah, both in Hendersonville, North Carolina. (Psst… did you know that current mega-producer Judd Apatow co-wrote “Heavy Weights” back in 1995?) A final 90s camp classic, “Camp Nowhere,” was shot at Golden Oak Ranch in Newhall, CA, a property owned by Disney. In fact, many other films used the ranch as well, including “Back to the Future,” “Cry-Baby,” and “The Majestic.”

And for a “real” dose of camp life, the show “Bug Juice” was aired. One of the show’s filming locations was Camp Waziyatah in Waterford, Maine, which has seemingly every possible camp-related activity, from outdoor sports to performing and visual arts. It’s no wonder this camp was chosen to air, as it has such a rich range of summer camp must-haves.

Rent a few of these movies, reminisce about your own summer camp days, or send your little ones off to one of these celluloid summer camps. Either way, the sun is shining and camp days are here - head to the mess hall for a sloppy Joe and we’ll see you in the bunk after the swimming test!
